Course Description

This is an elective, semester course in family and consumer sciences for 10th –12th grade students.  Human Development is a class designed to help students learn about children in a parenting role or as career working with children.  Students will gain knowledge in the developmental stages of a child and apply this knowledge when working with children.  Students will plan and implement learning activities for young children and carry out these at a preschool.  Topics covered:  development of children through school age, plan and prepare lesson plans and activities for various ages.

 

Instructional Philosophy and Delivery Plan

Students will be expected to meet all of the course goals and to be able to demonstrate their understanding of the concepts taught.  Instruction will focus on lectures, discussions, guest speakers, projects, technological resources, field trips, hands-on activities and an on site work experience.  Students will have the opportunity to work individually and as a member of a team to complete projects.  FCCLA related projects would be integrated into classroom projects and activities.  Assignments will require students to draw upon academic skills in mathematics, science, social sciences, and language arts.

 

Students will be expected to utilize family and community resources to obtain information.  The information may be obtained but not limited to classroom handouts, guest speakers, field trips, community resources and Internet and computer technology resources.  All students will complete course requirements at a minimum of 70 percent level of specified quality to pass the course.  To help meet the requirements, students will learn how to evaluate personal and peer progress and make adjustments needed.  Student assessment will be based on individual and team completion of: Reading/worksheets on each unit, projects, work habits, tests of student knowledge of concepts and laboratory experiences.

Major Course Projects:

 The students will demonstrate their skills by completing the following projects:

The students will plan and prepare lessons for toddler and preschool children.  They will plan, prepare and carry out childcare labs for preschool children. 

 

Assessment Plan

 

The students will be assessed in a variety ways, such as the use of checklists, essays, tests, fill in the blank tests, demonstrations, matching quizzes/tests, short answer exams, worksheets, written critiques, discussions, presentations/speeches, brochure, multimedia presentations, observation, budgets, group projects, and rating scales.  Points will be awarded to each of the activities they will be graded on.
